Bobbi L. Thury, Co-Founder and Attorney
Bobbi Thury is known for asset protection planning, whether it’s for high net-worth clients or to shelter assets for those running out of money in a nursing home. She is a board-certified Estate Planning Law Specialist by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils and is an Accredited Estate Planner. Bobbi is also the only Certified Elder Law Attorney certified by the National Elder Law Foundation in South Dakota, she is accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs, a member of the Academy of Special Needs Planners and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Bobbi has gone through the educational process of the certified value growth advisors and certified exit planner advisors for family or privately held businesses, and along with her Juris Doctor, she also has a Master in Business Administration and is a member of the State Bar of South Dakota’s Business Law Committee. Bobbi was the State Bar of South Dakota Young Lawyer of the Year, Great Plains Super Lawyers Rising Star, and Martindale-Hubbell BV Distinguished. Kate Bartell Nowak, Attorney
Kate Bartell Nowak practices in all three of the firm’s practice areas: estate planning, elder law and business planning. In addition, she helps business clients with employment law. Kate was a Norman Bradley Scholarship Recipient, and graduated in the top 10% of her law class. She went to law school to help people; and now in private practice, she finds that helping individuals, families, and businesses purposefully plan to achieve goals and protect what matters most incredibly rewarding. When it comes to employment law, Kate focuses on planning that sets the business and the employees up for success and to address employee related issues before they occur. A proactive approach helps the employer foster a positive and engaging workplace culture, attract and keep employees, and also reduces future legal liability for employment related claims. There is no greater resource for a business than its team of employees, so success in employment law planning has a ripple effect in not only the business, but also in the lives of employees and the communities they work in. Drawing heavily on her own past experience of serving as In-House Counsel for the Sioux Falls School District, Kate is uniquely qualified and prides herself on delivering holistic and practical advice when helping clients. Kate is also a devoted mother of two lively children, two dogs, and a busy husband. In her free time, Kate loves to travel and just be with her family.
After graduating from the University of Denver with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, I continued my education and graduated from the University of Colorado, Denver with a Master of Public Administration. In 2013, I earned my law degree from the University of Denver Sturm School of Law, where I was a teaching and research assistant. Prior to joining Legacy Law Firm in 2021, I worked at the Sioux Falls School District as in-house legal counsel for five years and taught law related classes at Southeast Technical College.
Ryan Fargen, Attorney
Ryan Fargen practices in both estate planning and business planning. Ryan also brings an intellectual property background and is a registered patent attorney. He was a Jayhawk Scholarship Recipient and received a certificate in Media and Technology Law while at law school. He is a Brookings South Dakota native and has always considered himself a problem solver. Previously, he solved problems for six years as an industrial engineer where he worked with customers and production teams to ensure quality and efficiency. After law school he solved client’s problems related to intellectual property by providing guidance and securing patent and trademark protection for individuals and businesses. Ryan has always enjoyed his work most when it is collaborative and to the benefit of others. He has found estate and business planning to be a natural fit with his personality and goals because clients leave with a top-quality plan allowing them the peace of mind from being heard and understood. Ryan has a unique perspective on the challenges found in estate and business planning and tries to use that perspective to solve the technical and complex needs of our clients. He welcomes all questions and concerns and wants to make sure our clients are comfortable and at ease when trusting Legacy Law Firm to be their estate planning and business planning partner.
Ryan graduated from Brookings High School and proceeded to Iowa State University to study Engineering. He graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial & Manufacturing Systems and went to work in Des Moines, Iowa. He worked for six years as an engineer at a company supplying parts for the world’s leader in farm equipment. Wanting to grow his skills to better help manufacturers and businesses, he decided to apply to law school to pursue a career as a patent attorney. He attended University of Kansas School of Law where he focused on intellectual property. While in law school he worked as an intern at the campus museum where he provided guidance on copyright risks and contract review. After law school, Ryan took the patent bar and became a registered patent attorney, he then worked as an intellectual property attorney in South Dakota with a focus on patents and trademarks. He is licensed to practice law in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Sandy Hensch, Paralegal
I am the firm’s drafting and signing Paralegal for estate planning. I assist the attorney in drafting estate plans to meet our clients’ goals, and then meet with the clients to explain and execute their plan. As an estate planning paralegal for the past 13 years, I enjoy the client interaction and collaborative team environment.
I graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics and Fashion Merchandising with Honors. I also graduated from National American University with my Associate Degree in Applied Science in Paralegal Studies with Distinction. My husband and I have two grown sons and we live on an acreage right outside of Sioux Falls.
Christine K. Lillo, ACP, Paralegal
I am a Paralegal and assist in the probate and trust administration, business and elder law areas of the firm. I graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology with a specialization in Human Resources. Prior to obtaining my bachelor’s degree, I graduated with honors from Kilian Community College with an AAS degree in legal assistant studies.
I am also a Certified Paralegal with advanced certifications in Estate Planning & Probate and Business Organizations, in both Incorporated Entities and Non-Corporate Entities. I have over 25 years of experience working with estates and probates and am a past President of the South Dakota Paralegal Association. I also serve as a member of the Certifying Board for National Association of Legal Assistants, The Paralegal Association, and have served as a member of its Board of Directors. I enjoy learning and regularly seek out learning opportunities.
Connie Jons, Paralegal
I have the privilege to assist families who have lost loved ones or are helping loved ones with a guardianship and conservatorship. When I am assisting on probates, my goal is to make the probate process as convenient and straight-forward as possible for our clients during such difficult times. For guardianships and conservatorships, I truly enjoy helping clients be prepared for a seamless transition into serving as a guardian and conservator and helping assisting them to be equipped for the responsibilities going forward.
Danielle Voss, Legal Assistant
As a Legal Assistant, I assist with drafting and plan coordination, and work closely with our elder law clients. I attended the University of South Dakota where I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Biology and my Master of Science Degree in Health Administration. I have a background in the healthcare field, as I have previously worked in various nursing homes and at the South Dakota Human Services Center. You can usually find me assisting with long-term care plans, and elder care planning, Medicaid Applications, or helping clients coordinate their assets with their estate plan. My goal is to make the estate planning process as convenient and straight-forward as possible for our clients. I also enjoy serving as a resource to connect clients to the appropriate advisors and resources.
Joesy DeNoble, Plan Coordinator
As our firm’s Plan Coordinator, I also enjoy helping our clients coordinate their assets with their estate plans. This entails meeting with clients, reviewing client asset information and accurately drafting transfer documents to help ensure their estate plans will work as designed. Many clients are initially confused by the idea of funding or coordinating assets, so I am able to put their minds at ease by helping them through this process. Our team goes the extra mile to help each other and our clients.
My previous experience at a trust company provided me with a solid foundation before transitioning to help serve clients at Legacy Law Firm.
Felan Link, Director of Operations
My goal is to keep our office running at peak efficiency. I handle a wide range of our firm’s operations, including bookkeeping, marketing, office and project management. I have more than ten years of experience in business management and consulting, as well as a robust entrepreneurial spirit. I grew up in eastern Iowa. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Dakota. I love being active and being involved in the community as a volunteer for Junior Achievement. I live in Sioux Falls with my husband, Matt, and our two daughters, Keda and Audi.
